The entire word-processor has been designed for the visually impaired as a single application.
It allows you to compose letters with your own headed notepaper, or to produce documents, notes, lists or any other type of printed material.
Help will always be available to you from the function keys. This means that at every stage in the document creation you can obtain feedback and guidance. Use simple keystrokes to obtain information about your typing environment and to help you to structure your document.
Use simple guided keystrokes to set up paper and character font sizes. Keystrokes are spoken back to you so you will know each character typed. You will hear every word and sentence created read back to you.
Amendments and error corrections are confirmed to you. Use the cursor keys to re-locate your typing position and PortType will tell you where you are.
At any time, you can have your entire document read back to you.
When you come to print your document, PortType will guide you through the routine for your printer.
PortType has its own document saving facility so that your letters can be kept for reference and documents worked on over a period of time.
Would you need to send the same, or similar, letters to several people? No problem: edit a standard document to get individualised versions for the different recipients.
Think your typing skills won't be good enough for PortType? PortType has three levels of use.
At level one you have a talking keyboard. This enables you to gain familiarity with the layout of the keyboard and to practice your typing skills without creating a typed document. No letter or document can be typed at this level.
Level two gives you a typed document, but each key has a press delay. This means that when you press a key, you'll hear immediately what the key is. If you want to add it to your letter, keep the key pressed until a beep tells you that the character has been transcribed. If it's not the key you wanted, press another key. At this level, PortType helps you find the key you want and minimises the number of corrections you would otherwise need.
Level three is the normal typing mode. The keys are spoken and immediately transcribed. If you type faster than the voice can speak individual characters, only typed words and sentences will be spoken back to you.
